Tricker’s of Northampton 27th October 2015
We've always been proud of our relationship with Tricker’s, one of our core suppliers.
They originated in 1829, when one Joseph Barltrop founded the company in Northampton, where it remains located to this day.
The Barltrop family has been at the helm of Tricker for over 150 years, and the name "Tricker" comes from when Walter James Barltrop, son of Joseph Barltrop, married Claire Louise Tricker in 1862. The name change occurred because "Tricker" was thought to be a more "commercial" name for the business.
The factory, which we visited most recently in October 2015, is on St. Michael's Road, Northampton. About 90 individuals are employed, and output stands at around 1400 pairs a week. While this is not a large amount by present mass-production standards, this relatively “low” output is due to the time, care and craftsmanship put into each and every pair of shoes. When you buy Tricker's, you buy quality.
Whilst we are discussing Trickers, we thought we should share this image of these 17 year old Tricker's Picadilly with you. They have been down to visit their birth place this week at the Trickers factory in Northampton, and are just about to be put away in the box. With older shoes, we always recommend using some renovator regularly - preferably Saphir Renovator as pictured here. The old leather will benefit from the oils and moisture contained within the cream. A little polish so that they will be ready for wear the next time they are called upon for duty, and they are ready for their dust bags and a well deserved rest.
