Shell Cordovan at Pediwear 15th December 2017
Pediwear is offering more Cordovan footwear than ever before.
Introducing Cordovan leather footwear to our customers has been a journey of unexpected joy and adventure. To appreciate the qualities of the leather and gather a clear perception of them is a fascinating process.
Cordovan is an equine leather made from the fibrous flat muscle beneath the hide on the rump of the horse. It is cut from the rest of the hide in the shape of a shell - hence it is sometimes called 'shell' cordovan.
The leather derives its name from the city of Cordoba, Spain, where it was originally prepared by the Moors.
Cordovan has strong crease resistant characteristics and is very durable - often footwear manufactured with cordovan uppers will last many years with just the soles needing replacing. Their manufacture requires expertise and careful attention to detail.
Over time the appearance of the Cordovan uppers will only improve by polishing with consideration to give a stunning appearance. We do recommend the use of specialist cordovan products as the different characteristics of the leather - in particular its porous nature - results in different care needs.
As those who already own this fine leather will appreciate, cordovan is a joy to own and wear, and with a little care will remain so for many years.
